Screens in young children – what impact on development
Screen time in young children is now a central issue in child development.
Numerous studies highlight the effects of early and excessive screen exposure on concentration, behavior, and learning abilities. Children may experience greater difficulty concentrating, engaging in activities, or regulating their emotions.
It is important to remember that screens are not limited to social media. They also include cartoons, video games, tablets, and smartphones. Even content perceived as "appropriate" can, with excessive exposure, impact a child's development.
In some cases, difficulties encountered at school (restlessness, inattention, defiance) can be exacerbated by significant screen time at home.
The goal is not to make anyone feel guilty, but to raise awareness. A clear framework, limited screen time adapted to the child's age, and a variety of activities (games, reading, outdoor activities) are essential for fostering balanced development.
In our schools, we observe daily how a screen-free environment promotes concentration, independence, and a love of learning.
